It is no secret that staying hydrated is one of the most defining steps to ensuring beautiful, glowing skin. In fact, when your skin is dehydrated it can have less than desirable effects such as:
- Lacking elasticity
- Dull tone
- Being more prone to breakouts
- More visible fine lines and wrinkles
Which is why maintaining proper hydration is so important.
But what is the most optimal way to hydrate?
I am glad you asked 😉 Recently I began looking more into the best ways to hydrate our body and thus our skin. What I found, thanks to Dr. Lesley Ike, is certainly worth sharing.
For starters, many of us are drinking too much water in a single sitting. Have you ever felt like you were chugging water all day long only to still feel thirsty? The reason is our kidney can only hold 4-5 ounces of water at a time to filter through our system. A good rule of thumb is to drink 4 ounces of water every thirty minutes. This will save you a few trips to the bathroom while still keeping you hydrated.
In addition to when you drink, WHAT you drink can play a huge role in your hydration as well. When we drink water by itself, we flush our body of important electrolytes. Electrolytes are a key component in helping our body maintain homeostasis and keeping all of the body properly hydrated. A great way to ensure that your body is being replenished in electrolytes along with water with each swig is as simple as adding a pinch of himalayan salt to your water. If salty water on its own isn’t for you, you can try pickle juice. That’s right! Drinking pickle juice is a great way to make sure your body has plenty of vital electrolytes to keep your body and skin hydrated.
Along with the salt, another great additive for your drinking water is fruit. Aside from adding a splash of flavor, adding both fruit and vegetables to your water is a great source of phytochemicals. This can help you not only stay hydrated but also help protect your DNA from damage which in turn can help keep your skin appearing youthful for longer.
Bottom line, there are so many small adjustments to how we drink water that can positively impact our ability to hydrate and ultimately maintain the skin complexion that we desire.
